[Dr Carol Cooper, General Practitioner] Most women actually have a perfectly healthy pregnancy with twins or more, but it is important for you to know about possible complications. First, vaginal bleeding is about 3 times more common for multiples compared with single pregnancies. While any bleeding actually comes from you, not from your babies, all the same, you should tell your doctor about any bleeding. And the heavier the bleeding is, the more significant it is. Another complication, pre-eclampsia, is also more common in twin and multiple pregnancies, especially in the last 3 months. There are often no symptoms, but blood pressure rises and there's protein in the urine. So this is one extremely good reason for having regular antenatal checks. Excess amniotic fluid, which is known as hydramnios, and low birth weight of 1 or more of your babies are also risks with a multiple pregnancy. These complications may sound pretty scary, and I know that many women worry about being told they have a high-risk pregnancy. But going to all your antenatal health checks and knowing what to do should you develop symptoms between appointments will help you avoid serious problems and have a great outcome.
