Why anxiety can interfere with contraception?
When we have a situation of anxiety
in fact we have a series of very concrete problems
The first is "remember to do things":
anxious people are very distracted.
Here, then, when we talk about drugs
the cardinal problem is to be precise, regular, constant in taking them.
For this reason, even the pill,
which is a hormonal contraceptive taken by mouth,
may face a big problem, which is forgetfulness.
The scientific data that we have
suggest that anxious women
forget about three times more than
women who have a normal level of anxiety,
than normal people.
In this case, you should suggest to the anxious girl or woman
different methods of contraception,
that is less vulnerable to their anxieties,
their forgetfulness.
And, therefore, we can certainly go on the patch,
which is a method which we call "once a week":
changing it once a week
- Just put a memo on the phone -
and you're done.
We would also have the vaginal ring
but we know that anxious people
were more frequent intestinal disorders
- The so-called irritable bowel syndrome -
that frequently are associated with vaginitis,
particularly candid.
This is the reason why,
as a physician and gynecologist,
in case of anxiety disorders
I prefer to suggest a contraceptive
safer from the point of view of forgetfulness, as the patch,
but also less vulnerable to complications
of irritable bowel syndrome,
such as vaginitis, in particular Candida.
