[Toxic Waist - The Fat Cycle]
People in rich countries are getting fat at a really alarming rate.
Every year, it seems, a new fad diet is invented [Dr Derrick Cutting, General Practitioner]
that claims to be able to shift the pounds.
But they don't seem to work because every year more and more people are becoming obese.
The problem is that these diets aren't based on science.
They don't take into account the fact that obesity is part of a vicious metabolic cycle
and that abdominal fat is metabolically toxic.
By this I mean that if your waist is too big,
your body produces chemicals that upset your metabolism.
The chemicals, called adipokines,
cause unbalanced blood fats and cholesterol,
raise blood pressure, and most importantly
poor control of blood glucose causing high insulin levels,
and this leads you to get even fatter.
It really is a vicious cycle.
The buildup of abdominal fat that is central to the metabolic syndrome
is the cause of three modern health epidemics in the western world:
obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
Losing weight can really lower the risk of dying from cancer,
a heart attack, or a stroke.
And a huge part of losing weight is controlling what you eat.
So many diets tell you to give up the things you enjoy
or only eat one type of food,
but these diets often don't work.
Your diet should really be based on scientific evidence
not on unfounded theories.
The truth is that you don't need to eat a boring diet to be healthy.
You just need to eat the right amount of the right types of food.
